And now comes the heat.
The mixture of quick afternoon thunderstorms combined with daytime temperatures in the 70s and low 80s has been ideal. The farm looks plugged in — like it somehow is being lit from within. The colors can be incandescent.
The 10-day forecast, however, looks hot and dry. Good thing we have irrigation!
We were busy in the fields and the kitchens this week, working with a mounting harvest: everything from leek scapes to spring onions to cardoons.
We have just started to harvest carrots — look for them at the market on Saturday and in the restaurants.
This week, too, will be the first with fresh peas — also known as candy pods. You will want to eat these by the fistful, and you will swoon over them in your restaurant dishes.
Pea shoots, too!
And look — that is a lot of peas! We won’t be running out. Beside this field is another large field of fava beans; we expect to start selling and serving them by next week.
