Is wind fun? We think not. We think only two kinds of people like wind: people who are crazy for kites, and sailors. That leaves billions and billions of people on earth who do not like wind.
Wind assailed Boulder for much of the week, lifting soil and grit from the ground and directing into into our eyes. Not fun!
And on Friday the wind made the plummeting temperatures feel much more cold, another variation on a theme of funlessness. But we made it through the week of wind, and have much to offer at the Farmers’ Market this week, the second of the 2018 season. It is supposed to be sunny and glorious and wind-free on Saturday — yay!
One cool thing about this week’s bounty — we offer greens that we planted this year. That’s right — some greens grow so rapidly, and get going while it is profoundly cool, that we can plant an harvest all within a brief period between the end of winter and beginning of spring. This week’s all-2018 greens include mizuna, Ruby Streak mizuna, and Osaka purple, a wonderful mix for salads.
Most of our greens, as we have written about before, are over-wintered. The carrots at the market on Saturday, too, spent the winter as roots beneath the ground, remaining just warm enough to withstand freezing while also enjoying temperatures low enough to boost sweetness and maintain freshness.
Now we spend a lot of time planting, although that wind complicates planting gambits, because the tempests shush away the lightweight seeds from the soil and scatter them. Right now, in addition to greens, we are planting potatoes, onions and garlic. Much more to come as the temperatures rise.
And without any more fanfare, let’s investigate our offerings at the Boulder County Farmers’ Market in downtown Boulder for Saturday.
