Carrots, Peas and So Much More

And now comes the heat.

The mixture of quick afternoon thunderstorms combined with daytime temperatures in the 70s and low 80s has been ideal. The farm looks plugged in — like it somehow is being lit from within. The colors can be incandescent.

The 10-day forecast, however, looks hot and dry. Good thing we have irrigation!

We were busy in the fields and the kitchens this week, working with a mounting harvest: everything from leek scapes to spring onions to cardoons.

We have just started to harvest carrots — look for them at the market on Saturday and in the restaurants.

Candy pods. Kids will eat these by the fistful, and so should you.

This week, too, will be the first with fresh peas — also known as candy pods. You will want to eat these by the fistful, and you will swoon over them in your restaurant dishes.

And look — that is a lot of peas! We won’t be running out. Beside this field is another large field of fava beans; we expect to start selling and serving them by next week.
